Without you, this process of moving/packing/unpacking for all our residents would have never been so successful.
It is with very heavy hearts that we share with you the unavoidable decision to sell the property and close SummerWood later this year. This decision was truly a last resort, and we postponed it as long as possible while exploring every viable option to continue. Despite our best efforts, this was - and remains - the only feasible path forward. Unfortunately, continuing Summerwood’s operations is not sustainable.
We understand that this is an emotional, difficult, and challenging time for you, and we are committed to doing everything possible to ease your transition and provide you with the support you need.
The independent living market for seniors has changed significantly in recent years. Newer communities are designed to provide a broader continuum of care – from independent living to assisted living to memory care, with succeeding levels of more intensive nursing and medical care available on-site. These communities now dominate an already competitive market. Summerwood was not designed to have, and does not have, the capacity or capability to provide that broad range of services.
Simultaneously, demand and interest in independent living communities has waned. Exacerbated by the COVID pandemic, more individuals are choosing to remain in their homes later in life, a trend that continues to accelerate. As a result, maintaining SummerWood as a viable operation, as originally envisioned a quarter of a century ago, has become insurmountable.
SummerWood remains deeply committed to the well-being of its residents and their families - a commitment that has not and will not change. We will continue operating at current service levels well into this year, ensuring no reduction in quality. We are working diligently to provide residents with an extended transition period, allowing you and your family ample time to thoughtfully determine the next residence that best meets your needs. During the months ahead, we will provide you and your family with additional information as soon as it becomes available.
To ensure your individual questions are addressed, members of our leadership team are available to meet with you. Additionally, we will dedicate a section of the SummerWood website to provide regular updates in the coming months. Look for the “SummerWood Cares” button on our home page for easy access to this information.
We are incredibly proud to have provided a compassionate home for hundreds of residents throughout the years. SummerWood has been a truly special place, filled with warm memories and remarkable milestones. The genuine friendships and loving connections formed here will remain in our hearts forever.
Warmest Regards,
